Skyline Chili

chili 5 ways and a chili dog

chili 5 ways and a chili dog

If you get to Columbus, OH, stop in at one of the 15 Skyline Chili locations. Skyline has been serving chili since 1949, based on an original Greek recipe.
This isn’t just chili, though. Try the 3-way – a bed of spaghetti covered with chili and a mound of cheese. Add onions to make it a 4-way.
Not sure about the spaghetti thing? No problem, you can have the chili plain, or over potatoes, hot dogs, or fries instead. Maybe you’d prefer it in a burrito.
Skyline is like fast food with sit-down service. I sat down and ordered, and had my food within a very few minutes. Really tasty, hot, and fast – some of my favorite things.
Try it. You’ll like it!

Pittsburgh Waterfront

Steel Mill Smoke Stacks

Steel Mill Smoke Stacks

Went down to The Waterfront in Pittsburgh last night with Louis and Debbie. Neat place. Lots of shops, resaurants, bars, and a big Lowes Theater.
Had Japanese (with sushi) at Yokoso, and watched Dinner for Shmucks at Lowes. Dinner was terrific! Lowes is huge and very impressive, and it was overkill for the movie (the movie being good but not great).
Hanging out with Louis today, and starting south tonight.

Boothbay Harbor and Exit from Maine

Had a nice stop in Boothbay Harbor, ME, per Doug’s suggestion. Checked out Orne’s Candy Shop (see pics), where I ate some delightful local fudge (3 kinds, no less). Ate a late lunch on the pier, and then sadly pointed my way out of Maine.

Since Doug was so kind to suggest this shop, and since I know of another in Montello, WI (later in the trip), I’m looking for other suggestions. Know of any little candy shops like this near you? Let me know and I’ll try to stop in!

Beal’s Pier lunch

I usually shy away from deep friend foods, but this one-pound seafood combo caught my attention. Haddock, shrimp, scallops, and clams, along with about a half-pound of fries. Eaten on the pier, beautiful breeze, gentle guitar music in the background, watching the boats on the water. Worth the visit!

This was at The Captains Galley on Beal’s Lobster Pier, Southwest Harbor, ME.

Day 9 – Maine At Last

Finally got to Maine today. Took a while to find a campground – they were all full! But got one called Smuggler’s Den, which includes free showers, and even has a pool and a laundromat.

Checked in at Acadia National Park, figured out what to see, and drove around the island for a while. Had lobster in Bar Harbor (with fresh blueberry pie ala mode), and then drove to the top of Cadilac mountain. Great views, great breezes, but kinda crowded!

Slept well – rained lightly through the night…

New Hampshire and Such

campsite in NH

campsite in NH

what a great day! I started out from Starseed in MA. Drove up into VT for some famous VT cheese, and then visited the Joseph Smith birthplace. After lunch, drove into NH. Staying at Moose Creek state park (only 60 miles or so from Canada). Tomorrow I’ll finally get into Maine.
Vermont is my favorite so far – good people, neat places… But it’s kinda early in the trip ;-)

Day 7: Catching Up

Almost back on the road. I jut spent a great weekend at the Starseed Sanctuary in Savoy, MA. It is over 100 acres of beautiful space where you can really get into about any part of yourself without distraction. John Terlazzo had a writing retreat here, but they all left yesterday and I’m still here. I decided a little service project here and there would be good for the soul, so I’m building some screens for one of the buildings. I should be back on the road later today, but I’m sure I’ll be back here! Pictures to follow soon.

Day 2 : Camping in Vermont

Campsite view, Day 2, VT

Campsite view, Day 2, VT

Day two, and I talked Logan into camping for the night. Found a nice state park near the college he’ll visit tomorrow, and also near a Brigham Young site. We may try to see that soon, and I’ll let you know more. The picture is the view from our campsite ;-)
Right now, dinner at Jensen’s Restaurant in Bennington, VT; then maybe a trip to Henry’s for some aged VT cheese.

At last, the adventure begins!

Twilight in VT

Twilight in VT

Just a quick note after a long day… Left PA at 6:30am. Travelled thru MD and down to Dover, DE to drop some things off with Aarika. Then up through DE, NJ, NY, and finally into VT at about 8:30pm. As we stopped at the welcome center, we were greeted by this sunset. What a first day — more about what I learned/forgot after some sleep ;-)

One More Day!

I can hardly wait for this trek to begin. Tomorrow (Tuesday) starts the first leg with a stop in Delaware, and then heading up to Vermont. I’ll have a companion (Logan) for the first couple days, but the real adventure begins on Friday when I fly alone!
